Why Milan at Christmas?

Milan Christmas markets stalls and festive lights

Milan transforms in December. The city that gave the world fashion and opera fills its piazzas with twinkling lights, street stalls laden with artisan gifts, and the warm scent of vin brulé. The Oh Bej! Oh Bej! market near Sforza Castle is one of Italy's oldest, while Piazza Duomo glitters under the cathedral's spires. It is a festive atmosphere that feels authentically Italian - rich, warm, and full of life.

The Itinerary

Bernina Express train crossing the Swiss Alps in winter

Day 1: Arrival in Milan

Fly from your chosen UK airport and transfer privately to the Avani Palazzo Moscova, a contemporary four-star hotel in a historic neoclassical building. After settling in, take a gentle evening stroll and enjoy your first aperitivo in a local wine bar.

Day 2: Christmas Markets in Milan

Explore Milan's Christmas markets at your own pace. Browse the Oh Bej! Oh Bej! market near Sforza Castle and the sparkling stalls in Piazza Duomo, picking up artisan gifts and warming up with mulled wine and seasonal treats.

Day 3: The Bernina Express & St. Moritz

Board the Bernina Express from Tirano to St. Moritz - a UNESCO World Heritage railway that winds through glaciers and breathtaking alpine scenery. St. Moritz is winter glamour at its finest: frozen lake, horse races on ice, designer boutiques, and mountain air. Return to Milan in the evening.

Day 4: Milan at Leisure and Departure

Depending on your flight time, enjoy a final morning in Milan. Wander the Brera district, browse design shops, or pause for coffee overlooking the Navigli canals before your private transfer to the airport.

Where You Stay

Your Milan base is the Avani Palazzo Moscova - a four-star contemporary hotel inside a beautifully restored neoclassical building. It combines modern comfort with characterful architecture, and its central location puts you within easy reach of all the city's festive highlights. Accommodation can be upgraded or adapted to your preferences.

Why This Holiday Works

Milan and St. Moritz sit at opposite ends of the Alpine glamour spectrum - one is all Italian warmth and city energy, the other is pure mountain elegance. The Bernina Express connects them through some of the most dramatic scenery in Europe. It is a four-day journey that gives you Christmas markets, alpine grandeur, and a UNESCO railway all in one trip.

  • Direct flights from regional UK airports to Milan
  • Private airport transfers included
  • The itinerary is a template - extend your stay, add nights in St. Moritz, or include an opera at La Scala
  • Perfect for couples, friends, and anyone who wants their festive break to feel special

The Bernina Express: What to Expect on Board

The Bernina Express is one of the great railway journeys of the world. It runs between Chur in Switzerland and Tirano in Italy, crossing 55 bridges and passing through 55 tunnels on its way over the Bernina Pass at 2,253 metres above sea level. The entire route is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The carriages have panoramic windows that reach up into the roof, designed specifically to frame the landscape as it unfolds. The line was built between 1908 and 1910 and still uses its original route, including the famous Brusio spiral viaduct where the train circles back on itself to descend the steep gradient.

In winter, the landscape is extraordinary. The train crosses the Morteratsch Glacier valley, passes frozen lakes, and climbs through deep snowfields where the track is cleared each morning. The journey from Tirano to St Moritz takes around two and a half hours and runs throughout the festive season.

Seat reservations are required and should be booked in advance, particularly during December when demand peaks. First class is recommended for the panoramic experience and offers more space between seats.

St Moritz in Winter: Beyond the Pistes

St Moritz is where Alpine luxury was invented. The resort claims to have originated the concept of winter tourism in the 1860s when a hotelier bet British summer visitors they would enjoy the winters too. He was right, and the town has never looked back.

Today, St Moritz in December is extraordinary even if you do not ski. The frozen lake hosts the White Turf horse racing in February, but in December it is a quieter and more intimate version of itself. The main street is strung with lights, the boutiques are decorated for Christmas, and the spa hotels offer long afternoons of warmth and calm.

  • The Kulm Hotel: The oldest hotel in St Moritz and one of the most atmospheric. The Sunny Bar and the Winter Garden restaurant are the places to linger.
  • Badrutt's Palace: The grande dame of Swiss Alpine hotels. Tea in the main hall on a winter afternoon is hard to match.
  • Corviglia by cable car: Non-skiers can ride the funicular up to Corviglia at 2,486 metres for the views and a long lunch at one of the mountain restaurants.
  • The Engadine Valley: St Moritz sits within the Engadine Valley, one of the most beautiful in the Alps. Walks along the lake on a clear winter day, with the Piz Nair in the background, are memorable even in snow boots.

Milan's Christmas Markets: Where to Go

Milan does not do Christmas quietly. The city's markets are spread across different piazzas and neighbourhoods, each with its own character.

  • Oh Bej Oh Bej (Piazza Castello): Milan's oldest and most traditional market, held around Sant'Ambrogio on 7 December. Street vendors, crafts, roasted chestnuts and mulled wine fill the area around the Castello Sforzesco.
  • Mercatone dell'Antiquariato (Navigli): Along the Navigli canals, antique dealers and vintage stalls create a more atmospheric, adult version of the Christmas market experience. The canal-side bars and aperitivo culture make evenings here special.
  • Piazza del Duomo: The cathedral square is decorated throughout December. The Duomo itself is worth visiting first thing in the morning before the crowds arrive.
  • Excelsior Galleria: The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II - one of the world's most beautiful shopping arcades - fills with Christmas displays. Window shopping here is an experience in itself.

Getting There and Getting Around

Milan is served by two main airports. Malpensa (MXP) handles most long-haul and international flights and is connected to the city centre by the Malpensa Express train (50 minutes). Linate (LIN) is closer to the city and handles many European routes.

Direct flights from London to Milan take approximately two hours. From Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh, connecting flights typically add 90 minutes to the journey time.

Within Milan, the metro is efficient and straightforward. The two-day pass covers unlimited travel and is excellent value. Taxis from the city centre to Milano Centrale train station take around 15 minutes.

From Milano Centrale, the TiranO train to Tirano (where you board the Bernina Express) takes approximately two hours. From Tirano, the Bernina Express runs to St Moritz with a journey time of around two and a half hours. The full rail journey from Milan to St Moritz therefore takes four to five hours - comfortable and scenic throughout.
