Why Choose a Cape Town Safari?
Cape Town is known for its sweeping ocean views, vibrant neighbourhoods, and those adorable penguins waddling along the shores at Boulders Beach. But what many travellers don’t realise is that just beyond the vineyards and city buzz, you can add a world-class safari to your South African holiday.

Cape Town and the Eastern Cape is one of my most consistently recommended combinations for clients who want a safari without the complication of malaria prophylaxis. The Eastern Cape reserves - Shamwari, Kariega, and Lalibela are the three I work with most - are genuinely Big Five with excellent ranger standards, and the malaria-free status makes them ideal for families with young children or anyone returning to work immediately after the trip. What surprises most clients is how different it feels from a Kruger or Serengeti safari - more intimate, more personal, with game drives covering smaller distances and allowing you to spend longer with individual animals rather than moving on.
No, there aren’t lions roaming the streets of Cape Town - but travel a little further and you’ll find yourself in the heart of the Eastern Cape, home to some of the country’s most spectacular private game reserves. These malaria-free safari experiences are close enough to seamlessly combine with a city break or Garden Route adventure, yet wild enough to deliver those classic safari moments - think elephant herds at sunset and lions silhouetted in golden morning light.
What Makes an Eastern Cape Safari Special?
The Eastern Cape blends rugged beauty with exceptional wildlife. From open savannahs to lush river valleys, this is where you’ll find the Big Five - lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo - as well as giraffe, hippos, zebra, and incredible birdlife.
Private Reserves - Off-road game drives, fewer crowds, and luxurious lodges with thoughtful personal touches.
Scenic Settings - Rolling hills, dramatic cliffs, and two stunning rivers make every drive a photo opportunity.
Intimate Experiences - Small group safaris with passionate guides and a relaxed, unhurried pace.
And the best part? No malaria risk. Just pack your sense of adventure and let the bush work its magic.

FAQs About Cape Town and Safari Holidays
Can you combine Cape Town and an Eastern Cape safari in one trip?
Yes - this is exactly the combination I specialise in designing. Cape Town and the Eastern Cape private reserves are perfectly paired: a few days in the city (Table Mountain, the Winelands, Boulders Beach penguins) followed by a transfer to a private game reserve for your safari. Most clients do it in ten to twelve nights.
Is the Eastern Cape safari malaria-free?
Yes, and this is one of its major advantages over other safari regions. The Eastern Cape reserves are fully malaria-free, which makes them particularly popular with families, pregnant travellers, and anyone who prefers not to take prophylaxis. You get proper Big Five wildlife in a stunning landscape without the health considerations that apply in Tanzania or Kenya.
What is the best time of year for a Cape Town and safari trip?
Cape Town is best visited from November to March - warm, sunny, and with long days for exploring. The game viewing in the Eastern Cape is excellent year-round, but May to September (the dry season) means thinner vegetation and better wildlife sightings. October to April overlaps well with Cape Town's summer season.
How long does it take to get from Cape Town to an Eastern Cape safari lodge?
You can fly from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth (now called Gqeberha) in about an hour, then transfer to your lodge. Most transfers from the airport take between one and two hours depending on the specific reserve. I arrange all of this as part of the itinerary so the logistics are completely invisible to you.
My Trusted Local Safari Partner
To make your safari extra special, I work with a trusted local partner based in one of the most scenic private game reserves in the Eastern Cape. This family-run reserve sits along two stunning river valleys and is known for its exceptional wildlife, warm service, and attention to detail.
For Couples, this reserve offers:
Secluded suites with open-air baths and private decks - perfect for stargazing.
Spa treatments in peaceful surroundings to unwind between game drives.
Bush breakfasts, sundowners, and romantic dinners in remote, wild locations.
A gym and wellness facilities for those who like to stay active while they relax.
For Families, highlights include:
Going on safari with children might sound like a logistical puzzle - but the right lodge makes it a complete joy. This family-friendly reserve goes above and beyond to make little ones feel welcome, engaged, and included in the adventure.
A fun and educational Kids on Safari programme, including animal tracking, bushcraft, crafts, quizzes, and Junior Ranger certificates.
A well-equipped playroom with puzzles, games, books, wildlife DVDs and more - ideal for downtime or rainy afternoons.
Babysitting services, flexible dining, and comfortable family suites.
Children are welcome on game drives, and guides make safety decisions thoughtfully, ensuring little ones are protected while still part of the action.
The entire trip is arranged and coordinated by me - so you benefit from expert local knowledge and insider access, without the stress of planning it all yourself.
Best Time to Visit Cape Town for a Safari
The good news about the Eastern Cape is that its game reserves are excellent year-round - one of the distinct advantages of this region over more seasonal safari destinations. That said, a few things are worth knowing:
May to September (winter) is often considered the best time for game viewing. Vegetation is lower, animals gather around water sources, and the weather is dry and clear. Mornings and evenings are cool, which makes time on the open game vehicle very pleasant.
October to April (summer) brings warmer temperatures, greener landscapes, and birthing season for many species - which means plenty of young animals and active predator behaviour. Birding is exceptional during these months, and the Eastern Cape's scenery is incredibly lush.
Cape Town itself is best visited between November and March when the days are long and sunny. Combining a Cape Town city break in summer with a safari works beautifully - just be aware that some periods coincide with South Africa's school holidays, when lodges can book up quickly.
How Long Do You Need?
Most clients find that three to four nights on safari paired with three to four nights in Cape Town hits the sweet spot. You have enough time to do at least six game drives (morning and evening each day), visit the Cape Peninsula and Boulders Beach, and still have a relaxed evening or two in the city without feeling rushed. A ten-day trip works really well.
If you'd like to add the Garden Route - one of South Africa's most scenic drives - between the safari and Cape Town, a twelve to fourteen day itinerary opens up wonderfully.

How to Get There
There are two brilliant ways to add a safari to your South Africa itinerary - depending on your pace and style of travel:
Option 1: Cape Town + Quick Flight
Spend a few days soaking up the beauty of Cape Town - hike up Table Mountain, sip wine in Constantia, and watch the penguins at Boulders Beach. Then hop on a short domestic flight (just over 1 hour) to Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha). From there, it’s a 90-minute scenic drive to the reserve.
This is the smoothest and quickest way to add safari to a city break.
Option 2: Part of a Garden Route Road Trip
If you’re planning to self-drive along the Garden Route, the Eastern Cape is the perfect grand finale. Start in Cape Town and take your time exploring places like Hermanus, Knysna, and Plettenberg Bay before heading inland to the reserve.
Driving distance from Cape Town to most Eastern Cape reserves: Approx. 9 - 10 hours. Recommended as a multi-day road trip with overnight stops
Either way, your safari experience flows beautifully with the rest of your South African holiday - and I’ll help you plan the route that best suits your style.
A Cape Town safari - based just beyond the city in the malaria-free Eastern Cape - offers all the thrill and beauty of a traditional safari, without the hassle. You get golden-hued game drives, riverside relaxation, and unforgettable wildlife encounters, plus easy access to penguins, beaches, and vineyards.
Whether you’re planning a once-in-a-lifetime family holiday or a romantic escape for two, it’s a trip that stirs the soul and stays with you forever.
