Is Jamaica open after Hurricane Melissa?
Yes. Hurricane Melissa made landfall in western Jamaica as a Category 5 storm on 28 October 2025, hitting the west and south of the island hardest. Tourism recovered in stages over the following months, and most of the hotels I suggest on this page, on the north coast and in Ocho Rios, Port Antonio and the Blue Mountains, had reopened by spring 2026.
Recovery has not been even, so I check the FCDO travel advice for Jamaica and each hotel's current position before I recommend anywhere. Here is where the hotels on this page stood when I last looked.

When is the best time to visit Jamaica?
Jamaica is warm throughout the year. December to April is generally the driest and most popular time to visit, with lower humidity and excellent conditions for beaches and exploring. May and June bring more tropical showers, while July can offer a slightly drier interval before the wetter autumn months. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the greatest activity usually between mid-August and mid-October. Conditions also vary across the island, with Port Antonio generally greener and wetter than the west and south. I'll help you choose the right time and coast for the holiday you have in mind.

Negril and the West
Best for: beach days, sunsets and a slower pace. Negril is Jamaica at its most relaxed, with the soft sands of Seven Mile Beach, warm Caribbean water and spectacular sunsets. Stay beside the beach or above the sea in a secluded cliffside retreat, with unhurried days, excellent swimming and laid-back restaurants. Transfers from Montego Bay generally take around 90 minutes.
Port Antonio and the East
Best for: seclusion, rainforest and boutique hideaways. Port Antonio reveals a quieter, greener side of Jamaica, where forest-covered mountains descend towards hidden coves, rivers and waterfalls. Drift along the Rio Grande on a bamboo raft, swim at Frenchman's Cove or retreat to an intimate boutique hotel. The longer journey is rewarded with seclusion, natural beauty and a wonderful sense of place.
Kingston and the South Coast
Best for: music, culture and the Blue Mountains. Kingston brings together Jamaica's music, art, history and food, with the Blue Mountains rising beyond the city. Continue south for the slower pace of Treasure Beach, the pools of YS Falls and the wildlife of the Black River. Families
For families, I lean towards hotels with space to spread out and plenty to do close by. Half Moon, with its long private beach, villas, pools and children's activities near Montego Bay, and Round Hill, with its crescent beach and family villas, both make an easy base. Days can mix beach time with rafting on the Rio Grande, Dunn's River Falls and gentle boat trips, so there is something for every age without long drives.
Couples
For couples, Jamaica rewards going a little smaller and quieter. Jamaica Inn and GoldenEye sit on private coves on the north coast, Rockhouse looks out over the cliffs at Negril, and Strawberry Hill offers cool mountain air above Kingston. Negril for Seven Mile Beach, sunsets and a slower pace, about 90 minutes from the airport. Montego Bay for short transfers and a wider choice of resorts, restaurants and golf.
Half Moon and Round Hill near Montego Bay both work well for families, with space, villas and children's activities.
Couples Sans Souci in Ocho Rios is adults-only and all-inclusive. For something smaller and more personal: Strawberry Hill in the Blue Mountains, Geejam in Port Antonio or Rockhouse in Negril.
It suits an easy family break, but you'll miss a lot of the island. Many of my clients pair a resort with a few nights in Port Antonio or the Blue Mountains, plus private trips to rivers, waterfalls and local restaurants.
Seven nights is enough for one area. To pair the coast with Kingston, the Blue Mountains or Port Antonio, allow at least ten.
Montego Bay is usually the most convenient airport for Negril, Montego Bay and much of the north coast. Kingston is better placed for the capital, the Blue Mountains, Port Antonio and parts of the south and east. Ocho Rios can be reached from either. I'll compare the available flights and transfer times before deciding which airport makes most sense for your itinerary.
